A coach who is considering upgrading his team’s helmet supply might be interested in the story of Wetumpka (Ala.) coach Tim Perry.
Perry, whose players currently use Riddell Speed helmets released in 2008, is looking to upgrade to the Riddell Speedflex helmets. The cost for 86 brand new helmets: $27,520.
So far, the team through a Boston butt fundraiser and a contribution from the Alabama Football Coaches Association has generated around $4,500 of the cost to buy 86 Riddell Speedflex helmets, which have received a 5 rating from Virginia Tech who has taken the lead in studying helmet safety. Virginia Tech hands out ratings 1 through 5 with 5 being the safest after putting helmets through rigorous impact testing with machines and dummies.
