Give the Fitzgerald High Team Moms credit for being resilient.
A year after falling agonizingly short to crosstown rival Irwin County in their quest to earn the title of Georgia’s top football moms, Fitzgerald has deservedly earned the title.
FNF Magazine recently recognized the Fitzgerald Team Moms as the winners of the 2016 Friday Night Football Team Moms Contest, sponsored by Samsung. This fall, FNF magazine set out to determine the school that boasted the best collection of football moms through an online vote at www.FNFMagazine.com/moms/.
The Fitzgerald moms received 1,970 votes on their way to winning the contest for the state of Georgia. The group earned the winning prize of $1,000 in the form of a donation to the football program.
Fitzgerald finished second in the 2015 FNF Team Moms Contest – just behind Irwin County. The two schools accumulated nearly 130,000 votes in an online poll with thousands of votes being registered up until the final deadline. This year, Fitzgerald won without a significant challenge from another school.
“I saw it on Facebook and shared it with the other mothers,” said Fitzgerald Team Mom Leader Joi Kinnett. “I told everybody they need to go and vote. I never have to worry about calling a mother and getting help.”
Kinnett is responsible for organizing meals for the players before and after practice during summer workouts. She also coordinates the other Fitzgerald mothers for pre- and post-game meals as well as snacks during the season.
“Coach (Jason) Strickland hasn’t told us what we’re going to do with the $1,000, but I’m sure we’ll use it in some way that supports the players,” Kinnett said.
Irwin County and Fitzgerald have played each other every season for the last 63 years. Many of the Irwin County and Fitzgerald players start competing against each other as rec league players.
