For coaches who cringe at the thought of incorporating yoga or pilates into an offseason strength program, the DeMatha Catholic (Md.) football team might help you change your minds.
For the last few years, DeMatha head coach Elijah Brooks has included yoga and pilates into his team’s offseason conditioning program. He found from personal experience that the poses in both exercise regiments left him feeling taxed — but also long and lean.
“I wanted to try it out before I got my team involved,” he said. “Without a doubt, it was one of the most difficult things I’ve ever participated in.”
DeMatha went 12-0 last season on its way to a Maryland state championship.
