College Coach Shares How to Select Captains

“It’s not necessarily the best players, but who has put in the best effort.”

By Dan Guttenplan, FNF Coaches Managing Editor

Greg Debeljak has compiled an overall record of 91-43 (.679) in 13 seasons as the Case Western Reserve University head coach. He led the Spartans to a 38-game regular season winning streak from 2006-10.

What is your process for selecting captains?

“It varies year to year. I like to set the captains in the spring. I think it’s important to have captains in the offseason. I’ll name one or two in the spring – guys that are no-brainers, not debatable. After we go through the offseason and see who’s working hard, I have the team vote on a couple more. It’s not necessarily the best players, but who has put in the best effort and shown leadership by example.”
